It’s crazy to think that the teachers of the law would receive “greater condemnation.” Why? Jesus uncovered their wicked hearts. He showed that despite their religious words, they were deserting God’s laws and doing as they liked. Behind their facade of holiness and uprightness, they were arrogant, deceitful, selfish, heartless, and uncaring. They knew the scriptures but their hearts were far from God. Jesus said that God’s most severe judgment was waiting for these teachers because they should have been living examples of mercy and justice. Jesus said we would know a tree by its fruit, and the Pharisees lacked the fruit of the spirit, proving that they did not truly know God.
Have you been reading the Word to get in your bible reading each day, or have you allowed yourself to meditate on the word of God, and invited the Holy Spirit to permeate every area of your heart? Do you take time to just soak in His presence and allow the Holy Spirit to prune you with scripture? Do you pray the scripture over yourself and repent of areas you don’t see the fruit of the Spirit? Jesus desires to get the kingdom of God inside of us. He desires to invade us and make us His temple and a light to the world around us. He burns with passion for us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds and make us more like Him. God is consumed with zeal for you to know Him and not just quote Him. Let’s ask God to help us lay down and repent of the “pharisee” in us, and by His help, bear the fruit of the Spirit as we allow our lives to be saturated in His word.
